One of the most impressive places in Uganda and probably in Africa is the Kazinga Canal, in the majestic Queen Elizabeth National Park. In this place it is possible to see a huge concentration of wild Fauna unique in the world, that for better or worse goes unnoticed for not being in countries like Kenya or Tanzania, with the Serengeti as the greatest exponent. We want to tell you about our experience and that you have to know about this spectacular place.
The Kazinga Channel
A unique space
The Kazinga Canal is a natural area of about 32 kilometers between Lake Edward and Lake George, occupying one of the most magical and fascinating extensions of Uganda's National Park par excellence, the Queen Elizabeth National Park.
There are few places in the world where you can see so many hippos together and not only that, hundreds of elephants and numerous buffalo Y crocodiles. It is a different place to others in the country, since you can travel by car or by boat, the latter the best way to travel it, an adventure that you can not miss if you plan to visit Uganda.
Arrival to the National Park
To access the Kazinga canal you have to reach Queen Elizabeth National Park and enter from Katunguru or from Kabatoro, the main entrance. The good thing about the Kazinga canal that in addition to the waterway of the canal itself, there are plenty of tracks to do 4 × 4 tours and ride a good safari watching lions, elephants or hyenas among others. It is important to know that there is only one area to stay in this area of the park, in the Mweya Peninsula, where there are several lodges, a hostel and even severalcamping, all of them overlooking the canal.
The good thing about staying in such a place is not only the landscape, but also the possibility of having the fauna very close. Sometimes they even sneak into elephants, but be careful, you don't have to worry because there is always vigilance and there are armed rangers in case the thing gets ugly. If you want to stay in a cool place, with pool and with a good restaurant you have to think about theweya Safari Lodge.
Mweya Safari Lodge
There is a small landing strip for those who come by plane to the canal
4 × 4 travel
The good thing about this part of Queen Elizabeth National Park that you can see the National Park in two different ways. One doing a safari with your car, be it a rental or with a driver, or a boat trip on the canal. Upon entering the area that overlooks the north bank of the canal you will see a lot of signs indicating several circuits. The most important are the Royal Circuit, the classic Channel Drive and the Crater Drive. Take food because the safaris are long and you have to travel many kilometers if you are looking for a specific animal, such as the lion. It all depends on the season, if it is dry, it will be harder to locate them.
There is no coverage in the area. If you carry a mobile we recommend that you download the maps to be able to orient yourself in the area
For about $ 30 you can do one of Uganda's most fascinating tours, the boat trip on the Kazinga canal. Under the Mweya peninsula is the jetty where boats leave the canal, large capacity boats and seats to go comfortable. The best seats are port, since they are the ones that face the south bank of the canal.
The ship's route is always in the direction of Edward Lake, a lake fed mainly by the most incredible mountains on the planet, the so-called Rwenzori or Moon Mounds, and very shallow, about 3m. We start navigating in reverse, towards the Lake george, but quickly changed course to line the southern shore in the direction of Lake Edward, the most spectacular shore.
The southern shore is a clear manifestation of what Africa is and life on this continent. Multiple species of animals coexist in harmony while they bathe, play or simply drink water. Huge herds of elephants, a multitude of hippos, crocodiles, snakes or buffalo, all together and respecting each other. Also, as if the man were one more, on the south bank there is a fishing village, a sample in which man can live perfectly with the wildest wildlife.
Take food and cold drinks or water if possible, since the route is long and can be very hot
