One of the dreams that I had not realized until now was to get on a boat to enjoy a whale watching in Monterrey or anywhere else in the world. Fortunately that dream came true in this city of California, located about 2 hours south of the city ofSan Francisco. Certainly years ago I tried in various places like Iceland, the Canary Islands, Chile or Argentina, ... but for one reason or another the opportunity did not come to me.

The spectacular whale watching in Monterrey

We were on a short 7-day trip through California during the month of May. The area had already visited other times and specifically Monterrey I had already been a couple of times and the boats that came from the Fisherman's wharf To spot whales. This place was an old fishing port that today is used as a base for dozens of fish / seafood restaurants and the occasional fishing and pleasure boat.

This new visit was not especially to see whales, but curiosity arose and after checking the price at the box office and which did not seem too expensive if we compare it with other countries, we decided to take one of the 3 boats that left daily. Then we got on the ship that left exactly at 15:30 PM. It was at that moment when I realized if they would return the price of the ticket in case of not seeing any cetacean, but later I realized that not seeing them would be practically impossible. There the whales swim in abundance.

After starting out of the port we went through a wavebreaker that was overflowing with sea ‚Äč‚Äčlions They had made that place their home. There was such a number that there was no room left for another little lion to enter.

I thought I would not see many more, big mistake because a couple of kilometers later we saw in the distance a lot of seagulls and cormorants in an area where the water was very rough. That impressed us a lot to see that it was a school of fish where a pack of sea lions were having a big feast.

And suddenly in the distance we begin to see how the water was squirting like geysers. It could not be anything other than whales !!! At the moment they were far away but it was already a good sign that some of us would have to see up close.

After 10 minutes towards the place where we saw the jet appeared the first whales about 100 meters from the ship, specifically a couple of blue whales. The two as a couple were swimming along the surface until one decided to return to the bottom of the sea showing us their beautiful tail. This is in fact a sign that it will not surface until a long time, so the ship's captain decided to continue the trip.

After continuing the trip we begin to see many more whales, about 20, all of them in groups of 2 to 5 individuals.

Suddenly, the people at the stern of the ship screamed and two huge whales passed extremely close to the ship.

The noise they made when expelling water from their nostrils was deafening. One could not imagine how there are animals of this size could exist.

5 minutes later our friendly friends decided that it was time to leave the surface, leaving us the moment that in all whale watching is expected. The majestic tail of a whale.

The moment where everyone does ohhhhh, and it is not surprising since it is the short space of time you enjoy it as if it were minutes.

With this wonderful view the captain decided to return to the port of Monterrey after 2h at sea. With this I noticed that the sun had burned us a little, all because of doing an activity that we had not planned but worth every dollar that had invested in it.

How much can we enjoy whale watching in Monterrey?

In Monterrey in particular there are two different seasons. From December to April you can enjoy gray whales and even killer whales. From April to mid-December there are blue whales, some killer whales and humpback whales. In any season the sighting of dolphins and sea lions is relatively simple, although sometimes there have been cases that see only a couple of whales. If you see that the sea is a bit, it is best to cancel it.

Each company located in Monterrey has one or more boats that leave around 3 times a day, the last one being around 3:30 p.m. / 4:00 p.m.

How much?

The whale watching excursion costs 45$, to which we must add 20$ extra if we want to climb to the top of the ship, although from below it looks fabulous. We even asked for discount to be 4, and in the end we subtracted some 2$ per person, much better than nothing.

How long does it last?

It lasts approximately 2: 30h or 3 hours depending on the weather and the speed with which we find the whales on the high seas.

What to take us on a whale watching excursion?

I shelter even in summer by the high seas wind. Sun cream since although it seems that we do not burn, the wind makes us relax and in the end we end up red as a take. Optionally we can take water and drink since the excursion is relatively long.

Binoculars and a camera with good zoom, recommended 200mm or higher would be perfect.

  • Big Basin Redwoods : If Muir woods fell short, this is your place.
