Tejeda has recently been included in the popular list of the most beautiful villages in Spain, so it is currently the first town in the Canary Islands to enter this prestigious list. Tejeda is a beautiful municipality located inside the Gran Canaria Island where not only its architecture stands out over the other towns of the island, but also for its impressive views towards the mountains and the nearby island of Tenerife, where you can see the Teide Peak.
Our stay was brief, but enough to stroll through its streets and enjoy its viewpoints towards the Tejeda ravine or the picturesque roque de Bentayga.
Tejeda and the "petrified storm"
A little history
Tejeda is lucky to be in one of the highest areas of Gran Canaria, a tremendously mountainous island and to access it you have to travel and live dozens of meandering curves. This picturesque area of Gran Canaria became an immense cauldron, of which today there is only that beautiful depression with story roque and those capricious mountains that Unamuno I call the petrified storm.
This area of theBentayga mountain range It was one of the last settlements to conquer by the Castilians in the fifteenth century, where there is still a sanctuary where the Canarian ancestors practiced religious rites.
In the heart of Gran Canaria
We are talking about a town that is located just over 1,000m high, so the Mountain weather and the feeling of being in full nature is felt from the first moment. Today Tejeda is home to more than 2,500 people, something that is perhaps not perceived by the dispersion itself and the geography of the town.

Roque de Bentayga
The first impression you get of the most beautiful town in the Canary Islands is its orientation. Challenging the sun, the sunset sun and exposed as a perfect viewpoint towards the Bentayga mountain range and to the neighboring island of Tenerife. White Houses reddish roof all respecting that urbanism that lacks many villages in Spain and the Canary Islands. Almost round perfection, something that makes him one of the most beautiful villages in Spain.
Luckily, Tejeda, even in high season, due to its small isolation and being far from the warm southern beaches make it still easy to visit. We arrived by car, being able to park both at the entrance and at the exit of the town, without problems and without stress, as if one of the most beautiful villages in Spain was not in front of us.
Next to the Church of Tejeda
The first thing you see when you arrive is theTejeda Church, which stands out above all buildings, and is possibly the tallest in town. At the entrance of Tejeda there is a park with a gazebo towards the Roque de Bentayga, the Degollada and at Cave houses of ArteneraAt the top of the mountain, one of the best views without a doubt.
La Degollada and Artenera
From the park we walked along the main street, that of Dr. Domingo Hernández Guera, towards the square of Our Lady of Socorro. The church is located there and although it seems on these lines a long stretch did not take us more than 2 or 3 minutes. Tejeda although it has more than 2,500 inhabitants many of its neighborhoods are far from the center as if it were other towns, but what is usually visited are the houses that overlook this avenue and everything that surrounds the main church.
This part of Tejeda is where most of the restaurants, like the deCueva de la Tea, which was where we ate on a terrace with spectacular views. Also in that same street there are several rural apartments with views of the mountains and from where you can enjoy beautiful sunsets.
In Tejeda you have to get carried away by its streets and by that church that dominates the entire mountain range. Although in an hour you can see the entire town perfectly if it is worth doing “toll” on its terraces and savor some good Canarian potatoes while the sun goes down with the Teide in the distance.
